Styling Tips for Seniors

These portraits will be displayed at your Graduation Open House, on your grandparent’s mantle, your new profile picture, and seen by many more people; so, you’ll want to look your best during your Senior Session.

Sure, it’s no problem to remove a handful of blemishes or birthmarks if that’s what you want, but there are some things you can do to help your photos look not just beautiful, but spectacular.

After seven years of experience in hair and make-up, I’ve compiled a list of style tips for every Senior to follow:
  • Bring props! Your instrument, football, baseball bat, favorite book, etc.
  • Two outfits minimum! Always bring your favorite outfit and your mom’s favorite outfit to your shoot. From there, you can go a ton of different ways but these two outfits are absolute staples.
  • Wrinkle-free clothing a must! You should always bring in freshly laundered clothes, and please iron your button-downs and dress pants. This also means bring your clothes in on hangers – not stuffed in a gym bag.
  • Schedule a hair appointment 2 weeks ahead! Everyone always feels shaky the first week or so of a fresh hair cut so to ensure your hair is at its peak condition.
  • Clean skin is key! Make sure you wash your face and moisturize beforehand, which will guarantee your skin is at its clearest and giving off a smooth glow.

Now ladies…
  • No glittery make-up! Natural tones are best for enhancing your natural beauty and creating timeless photos.
  • Hide tan lines! If your tan lines are noticeable, please hide them under clothing. This will save you time and costs on receiving your prints.
  • Mind your nails! Your fingernails, and possibly toenails, will show in the photos so be sure to clean up your cuticles and give them at least a clear coating.
  • Plan your look! Know if you want your hair in an up-do, curled, straight and have a plan! If you plan on having pictures with an up-do, prepare to shoot those first and know which outfit you want to pair with it. It is always easier to start with your hair up and then take it down, rather than spending precious shooting time styling your hair. Remember – the option to have me style your hair before the shoot is always available. Just ask!

and Gentleman…
  • Be well-groomed! The day of your session give yourself a careful, clean shave, or trim your facial hair.
  • Wear solids! Stripes and plaid don’t always photography well, and avoid graphic tees. Bring a black undershirt instead of white to compliment your skin and blend in.
  • Don’t know what to wear? Ask your mom, girlfriend, or your friends. Bring a outfit that represents your personality/your day-to-day and bring an outfit you’d wear to a wedding/a nice date.
  • Protect your skin! If you play sports or otherwise spend a lot of time outside during the summer, protect your skin with sunscreen to prevent a sunburn or schedule your senior session at least a week after the season ends so you don’t end up with a farmer’s tan in your photos.

Lastly, let me know before your Senior Session if there are any beauty marks, blemishes, or tattoos that you want to feature or to hide. I am always happy to feature what makes you unique or to cover what you don’t like during the shoot or in editing.
